Twenty films have been submitted for consideration as the best animated feature film in this year’s Academy Awards, making it likely that five films will be nominated in the category for only the second time ever.
The 20 films that have been submitted are
• Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel
• Astro Boy
• Battle for Terra
• Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
• Coraline
• Disney's A Christmas Carol
• The Dolphin – Story of a Dreamer
• Fantastic Mr. Fox
• Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
• Mary and Max
• The Missing Lynx
• Monsters vs. Aliens
• 9
• Planet 51
• Ponyo
• The Princess and the Frog
• The Secret of Kells
• Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure
• A Town Called Panic
• Up
Five of the films have until the end of the year to qualify by playing in a Los Angeles theater. They are Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, The Dolphin – Story of a Dreamer, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Planet 51, The Princess and the Frog, The Secret of Kells and A Town Called Panic.
The submitted features also have to meet the other requirements set forth in the Academy’s rules, which allow for as many as five nominations when more than 16 films are eligible.
The 82nd Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Feb. 2 at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The awards will be presented March 7 at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and televised live by the ABC Television Network.

OK, a little common sense here. Tankers like Meatballs, Alvin, Astro Boy and Mr. Fox should run for cover and never be allowed near a list. Princess & the Frog hasn\'t even come out yet, so how do we know if it\'s worthy of Oscar consideration now? For me, it\'s Up, Coraline, 9, Ice Age
and Planet 51 (a clever twist on UFO mania). I\'m hoping Princess makes it only because its success will revive the 2D feature market.

Uh...Planet 51 hasn\'t come out yet either.
Isn\'t it a little obvious that UP is going to win? I mean, Pixar takes first place every year.

Michael, you almost got it right. Up (which will most likely win), Coraline, 9, either Ice Age or Max and Mary, and Ponyo.
Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki can\'t help but create something spectacular with every movie they release. Grave of the Fireflies made me cry as hard or harder than Schindler\'s List.
