Imagi Studios and Summit Ent. will be at Anime Expo 2008 this weekend to introduce attendees to the upcoming animated feature film Astro Boy. The companies will be at booths 913 and 915 with various treats for anime fans, including a special edition Astro Boy t-shirt. Anime Expo kicks off today at the Los Angeles Convention Center and continues through Sunday, July 6.

David Bowers (Flushed Away) is directing Astro Boy from a screenplay by Timothy Harris. Set in futuristic Metro City, the movie will tell the tale of a powerful young robot that a brilliant scientist created in the image of the son he lost. Unable to fulfill the grieving man’s expectations, our metalic hero embarks on a journey in search of acceptance, experiencing betrayal and a netherworld of robot gladiators. The pic is based on the classic manga and anime property created by Japan’s “god of manga,” Osamu Tezuka.

Slated for worldwide theatrical release in 2009 from Summit Ent., Astro Boy will feature the voices of Freddie Highmore, Nicolas Cage, Donald Sutherland, Bill Nighy, Nathan Lane and Eugene Levy. Animation is being handled by Hong Kong- and Los Angeles-based Imagi, whose first feature was the 2007 box-office success TMNT, a CG-animated reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film franchise.
