While the emergence of digital technology spelled out the death of stop-motion animation in big budget effects work, it has also given birth to a resurgence in people getting involved in the art. What was once the work of hard-to-find single frame movie cameras and costly film stock is now done with inexpensive digital cameras and even cheaper frame grabbing software like iStopMotion.
Munich, Germany-based GeBE Computer & Peripherie GmbH has released Version 0.3 of iStopMotion. The new version is a complete rewrite of the popular animation application using Cocoa, Mac OS X’s native API environment. The switch was initiated to make the software more compatible with the operating system.
According to the company, users of the early versions have reported increased stability and a speed boost with the update. The “Last Minute Christmas Preview” of iStopMotion, released last December, was well received by Mac OS X users at home, in education and in the film industry.
iStopMotion Version 0.3 is available for free download at www.istopmotion.com/download. The version is still considered “prerelease” and may contain bugs or be missing features. User who make a small donation and contribute to ongoing development are eligible for a discount on the finished product if and when it becomes available.
