Arriving on DVD and VHS today is the direct-to-video sequel to Disney’s 2001 theatrical release Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Produced by Walt Disney Television Animation, Atlantis: Milo’s Return promises to stay true to the design concepts of popular comic book artist Mike Mignola, whose flat, graphic and layered style defined the first film.
This sequel reunites most of the voice cast from the original, with the exception of lead Michael J. Fox and late character actor Jim Varney. Returning cast members include Cree Summer (Rugrats) as the feisty Princess Kida, Corey Burton (Return to Never Land) as geologist Gaeton “Mole” Moliere, Don Novello (Saturday Night Live‘s Father Guido Sarducci) as demolitions expert Vinny Santorini, Phil Morris (Seinfeld) as Dr. Sweet, Jacqueline Obradors (NYPD Blue) as grease monkey Audrey Ramirez and John Mahoney (Frasier) as eccentric billionaire Preston B. Whitmore.
Spearheaded by exec. producer Tad Stones, Atlantis: Milo’s Return actually follows three adventures of the intrepid explorers, who leave Atlantis to explore lands as diverse as the deserts of the Southwest and the icy heights of the Nordic mountains and encounter mysterious powers, ancient legends and giant sea monsters.
DVD extras feature The Search For the Spear of Destiny, a submarine racing game that has players uncover facts about real lost cities of the world as they search for a final resting place for the Spear of Destiny. Also included are deleted scenes, Dolby digital 5.1 Surround Sound and a French language track.
Atlantis: Milo’s Return is rated G and runs approximately 80 minutes. The Buena Vista Home Ent. release lists for $29.99 DVD and $19.99 VHS.
