Paul Vester swims with DUCK

Acclaimed artist Paul Vester has joined the roster of Los Angeles-based DUCK Studio’s (formerly known as Duck Soup Studio) directors available for commercial work.

British-born Vester is an experimental animator whose innovative short films Sunbeam and Picnic rapidly caught the eye of the advertising community. Vester has also been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and will be working on a new film, In the Woods, a mix of 2D and 3D digital animation, out of DUCK.

Says DUCK president, Roger Chouinard, "To be able to work with an artist of the caliber of Paul Vester is great for our entire studio. We’re thrilled to have him aboard."

Through his own studio, Speedy Films, Vester directed his first film, Sunbeam, an homage to pre-Disney classic cel animation set to a popular song of the 1940s. His next film, Picnic, wass an experimental mixed media piece pioneering the use of found images on photographic backgrounds. He went on to direct many award-winning commercial spots and campaigns for Toshiba, Hershey, Jell-O, and Bubblicious. Vester’s most recent film, Abductees, is a blend of mixed media animation and live action based on tales of U.F.O. alien abductions.

Since relocating to Los Angeles, Vester has worked entirely in digital media. He was one of the first 2D/mixed media artists to make the successful transition to 3D CGI, and especially to have brought an experimental approach to computer graphics. Initially out of Rhythm & Hues, he directed commercials for Xerox, Hershey, Listerine, and GEICO. After his successful run at R&H, Vester left for Klasky Csupo to help launch their CGI division. At Klasky, he was the creative director behind, amongst others, the successful animated Earthlink spots.
