Get your latte mugs, black outfits and designer shades ready for the hipster-friendly Sundance Film Festival, as Robert Redford’s Park City, Utah indie event kicks off today with the premiere of Riding Giants, a documentary about the origins and history of surf culture by Stacy Peralta (Dogtown and Z-Boys).
Toon fans will be happy to know that animated projects are well represented in the 2004 edition of the festival. Among the features screening this year is Sky Blue, a sci-fi epic by Korean animator Moon-Saeng Kim, Destino, the long-abandoned Salvador Dali’s collaboration with Disney; Harvie Krumpet, Adam Elliot’s Annecy favorite, and Fast Film, Virgil Widrich’s homage to the golden age of Hollywood. Also unspooling at the festival is Jessica Yu’s intriuging documentary, In the Realms of the Unreal, which uses animation to highlight the imaginary worlds of recluse artist, Henry Darger.
