EA to Tangle with Catwoman

Gamers everywhere will soon get a chance to see if they have cat-like reflexes when the first video game based on Warner Bros.’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ upcoming Catwoman feature hits retail. Electronic Arts has been awarded the worldwide interactive rights to develop, publish and distribute titles that put players in the leather suit worn by Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry in the movie, scheduled for release on July 30.

“The dynamic visuals of Catwoman in action present an opportunity for a uniquely styled video game,” says Paul Levitz, president and publisher of DC Comics, which counts Catwoman among its many classic superhero properties. “We look forward to seeing how the wizards at EA translate the visual excitement of the film into their medium.”

Gamers will play as Catwoman, using her unique cat skills, senses and cunning to defeat enemies. Boasting incredible acrobatic skills, Catwoman can leap across roofs, run up walls, pounce on prey and avoid enemy bullets with feline grace. In addition, she can use her whip to swing through the air, and utilize the fully interactive environments to trap or knock her foes unconscious.

Catwoman was created by Bob Kane in the Batman series for DC Comics in the 1940s and has appeared in numerous Batman comics throughout the decades. The feline avenger has been portrayed by a number of screen actresses including Eartha Kitt and Julie Newmar in the 1966 TV series and Michelle Pfeiffer in Tim Burton’s 1992 big-screen sequel Batman Returns .

The first Catwoman game is under development by EA’s U.K. studio and is produced by the team responsible for the best-selling Harry Potter games. Last May, EA acquired the rights to produce games based on DC Comics’ Superman, which Warner Bros. is developing for another round on the big screen.

Scheduled for release in conjunction with the motion picture’s summer 2004 debut, the Catwoman game will be available for PlayStation 2, GameCube, Game Boy Advance and PC CD-ROM.
