The Directors Guild of America held its 56th Annual Outstanding Directorial Achievements Awards ceremony on Saturday, honoring director Peter Jackson for his work on The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. This was Jackson’s third nomination and first win.
Mike Nichols picked up the award for Movies for Television for the HBO miniseries Angels in America. The helmer previously won the feature film directing award for 1967’s The Graduate and picked up nominations for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) and Working Girl (1988). He was also honored with this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
The award for Children’s Programs went to Kevin Lima for his Wonderful World of Disney adaptation of the popular children’s book Eloise at Chistmastime by author Kay Thompson and illustrator Hilary Knight.
Noted feature director David Fincher (Fight Club, Panic Room) was honored for his effects-laden commercial work for Nike and Xelebri Phones. The Nike spots "Gamebreakers" and "Speed Chain," and the Xelebri Phones commercial "Beauty for Sale" earned Fincher his first DGA nomination and win.
