PlayStation Portable Postponed

Nintendo can breathe easier knowing its Gameboy won’t be challenged in the marketplace this Christmas. The Associated Press reports that Sony Corp.’s new handheld game device, PlayStation Portable (PSP), won’t make it to stores in time for the holiday shopping season as expected.

Sony says the North American rollout of the PSP won’t happen until the beginning of next year. However, kids in Japan will have it in their hands by year’s end and a prototype will be shown at the Electronic Entertainment Exposition (E3) in Los Angeles in May.

Games for the PSP will come on discs that look like mini CDs and the unit will connect to a PlayStation 2 console or the Internet via a USB port. Information on pricing for the unit and games is not yet available.
