SCI FI Begins Tripping the Rift

SCI FI Channel’s first animated series, Tripping the Rift, premieres tonight 10:30 p.m. The racy, CG animated half-hour comedy Joins the Thursday night lineup following the debut of the reality show Mad Mad House (9 p.m.) and the season premiere of the Shannon Doherty-hosted practical joke show Scare Tactics (10 p.m.)

Tripping the Rift features the voices of Stephen Root (Office Space, TV’s News Radio), Gina Gershon (Face/Off, Showgirls), "Stuttering" John Melendez (The Howard Stern Show) and Maurice LaMarche (Pinky and the Brain). Spoofing such sci-fi classics as Star Trek, Star Wars and 2001: A Space Odyssey, the series spoofs follows the intergalactic adventures of the crew of The Free Enterprise a smuggling vessel captained by a stumpy purple alien named Chode (Root). LaMarche voices Gus, Chode’s sexually confused and verbally abused robot slave, and Gershon is Six, a sexy cyborg. Lending voice to the ship’s computer is Melendez.

In tonight’s episode, "God is Our Pilot," Chode and Gus decide to take a trip back to the beginning of time and inadvertently kill God in the process. Upon returning to the present, they find a world of peace and harmony that is sure to drive Chode nuts.

The series started as a short film by creators Chris Moeller and Chuck Austen, which aired during SCI FI’s now canceled shorts series Exposure. Danièle Joubert produces and Jacques Pettigrew, Michael Lemire, Peter Schankowitz and John Hyde serve as exec. producers.
