Fox Family Voicetones A Big Hit

While it’s still not as a big a part of the cell phone business as once hoped for, revenue from the sale of ringtones and voicetones has been a nice boost to a number of content providers.

Case in point: Fox Mobile Entertainment, who has a mobile device hit with the baby-from-hell character from the animated comedy Family Guy.

According to Nielsen Mobile figures quoted in the Hollywood Reporter for the week ending February 25, a voicetone featuring Stewie, the family’s maniac infant with an upper-class British accent, was the number one download for the second consecutive week.

Meanwhile, a tone with the show’s neighborhood sleaze ball, Quagmire, finished in fourth place.

Ringtones, Internet browsing, streaming video and e-mail account for aproximately 11 percent of the cell phone industry’s total service revenue, according to Jupiter Media.

Family Guy is a great, hilarious show and property overall,” says Mitch Feinman, senior vice president Fox Mobile Entertainment. “It also targets the core mobile demo. The young males who are big fans of the show are big users of mobile media.”

Family is now in its seventh season, and is one of Fox’s biggest and most successful mobile content sources.
