Hunger Bombs, Robinsons Strong

The Gen-Y quasi re-make of the Alfred Hitchcock classic Rear Window took first place in this weekend’s box office derby. But it was the holdovers that made the bigger headlines. While the Shia LaBeouf vehicle Disturbia was taking in $23 million in North America, the Will Farrell comedy Blades of Glory hung in there in second ($14 million for the weekend, $90 million total) with Disney’s CG-animated Meet the Robinsons coming in third ($12 million for the weekend, $72 million to date).

First Look Pictures’ film version of the Cartoon Network hit Aqua Teen Hunger Force might have been the center of attention in January (when a marketing stunt in Boston ended up in a terror alert and a Beantown shutdown), but at this weekend’s box office it was a non-event. The pic debuted in 877 theaters, grabbing a weak $3.1 million for a 13th place finish.

Warner Bros.’ 300, meanwhile, added $4.3 million in receipts and passed the $200 million mark in domestic box office. Warner Bros’s Imagi-produced TMNT continued its steady progress adding just over $2 million to its $51 million tally thus far.

Another Warner offering, the f/x-heavy The Reaping shows no signs of turning its bad fortune around. The film slid 54% in its second weekend and has grossed less than $20 million in two weekends of release.
