Pocoyo DVD Dominates in Spain

Since debuting on the Spanish home video market on April 24, the award-winning, CG-animated preschool series Pocoyo has risen to the top of the charts. Citing GFK data, series creator Zinkia Ent. in Spain says more than 25,000 units have been sold during its first three weeks at retail, making it one of Spain’s top-selling DVD across all genres.

Co-produced by Granada International, in association with Granada Kids and Cosgrove Hall, Pocoyo has built a dedicated following on Spain’s TVE La 2 since its debut in October of 2006. The series has also been successful in other territories and has racked up a number of accolades. It won the BAFTA for Best Preschool Animation Series in 2006, and was named Best TV Production at Annecy 2006.

Since its release, more than 120,000 DVDs of the first two volumes of the show have been shipped to Spanish retailers. Additional Pocoyo DVDs will be released by Big Picture and Sony Pictures in late August (volumes 3 and 4) and mid-November (volumes 5 and 6). A collaboration has also been established whereby each DVD purchased will contribute a donation to the Spanish children’s charity Fundaci’n Theodora, which sends clowns into hospitals to help critically and terminally ill children.
