Icon Fortifies Vitaminix with Int’l Sales

Barcelona-based Icon Animation has inked a raft of international television, home video and publishing pacts for the animated, healthy-eating series Vitaminix, while also sealing deals for several series from its third-party distribution library. Vitaminix, which consists of 104 2-minute installments made its U.S. debut on premium cable outlet Animania HD, and is aired in more than 20 languages worldwide.

Television and home video rights to Vitaminix were snatched up by Greece’s 06TV, which also acquired the Icon-produced series Lola & Virginia (52×12) and Mimi & Mr.Bobo (33×26). The broadcaster also picked up third-party properties distributed by Icon, including the new series Rat Man (52×13), a co-production of RAI and Stranemani in Italy, Antena 3’s Cloud Trotters (26×26) and The Nimbos (26×6), and the new feature film Christopher Coolumbus (70′).

Icon Animation has also scored a number of Iberian deals. Balearic free TV channel IB3 signed on for Vitaminix, as well as Skyland (26×26) and Corneil & Bernie (52×13), which are both produced by Millimages U.K. and have also been picked up by Telemadrid. In Portugal, Icon and Entertainment Rights have placed Postman Pat (52×15) and Edebits (26×13) with free TV channel RTP for broadcast on RTP 2. Also in Portugal, Prime Books has signed a publishing agreement for Vitaminix.

Elsewhere, Mediacorp Kids free TV channel in Central Singapore has acquired all episodes of Vitaminix, and Brazil’s Spot Films has signed a home video deal for The Gnoufs (52×13).

Vitaminix uses animation to teach children about the nutritional value of food, minerals and vitamins. Each episode features one animal associated with a type of food to convey the life-long benefits of healthy eating. Other major broadcast deals for the show have been signed with Nickelodeon Europe (Germany, Holland, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark) Nickelodeon Spain, Nickelodeon Latin America, Disney Channel in Italy and TPS Jeunesse in France. In Asia, the show airs on the Disney Channel, Hong Kong Cable, Infiniss and EBS in Korea and EBC Taiwan.
