FlickerLab Animates Pink Panther

Those who love the classic Pink Panther cartoon series are sure to get a kick out of a new advertising campaign for the Virginia Lottery. The 30-second animated spot titled ‘Camouflage’ was created by FlickerLab in New York and emulates the Friz Freleng style as it introduces a new scratch-ticket lotto game. It is set to air on August 13 and will also be seen in movie theaters throughout the state of Virginia on August 6 (through Screenvision) and August 10 (through National Cinemedia).

The commercial pays homage to one of the vintage Pink Panther cartoons as the sneaky feline uses a museum’s pink walls to camouflage himself and pull the wool over a mustachioed museum guard protecting a Virginia Lottery ticket on display. The Pink Panther steals his cap, tosses it aside, and attempts to abscond with the valuable ticket, which offers a top prize of $12,000.

FlickerLab participated in the scripting, storyboarding and design of the high-definition spot, which was developed by +SmithGifford of Falls Church, Virginia, and produced in both English and Spanish. Production called for the use of Adobe After Effects, Photoshop Illustrator and Flash on PowerMac G5 and iMac Intel computers. Wacom Intuos 3 and Wacom Cintiq tablets were also employed, along with Apple Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro.

‘We are animators, so of course we all love the Pink Panther,’ says FlickerLab founder/creative director Harold Moss. ‘It is not an exaggeration to say that we were all jumping at the chance to work on this project. We were thrilled to find that everyone at the agency was as intent as we were on capturing the style and sense of humor from the original.’

The FlickerLab team included exec producer Tammy Walters, background designer Max Porter, storyboard artist Frank Gresham, animatic editor Dan Rosen, producer Franklin Zitter, 2D animators Nikolay Nachev, Thomas Smolenski, Alisa Harris and Jessica Milazzo, and After Effects animator and compositor Bryan Cox.

The iconic Henry Mancini theme from the Pink Panther films and cartoons was even licensed from MGM for the commercial, which can be viewed online at http://flickerlab.com/pr/pinkpanther.
