With the re-launch of the extreme game show American Gladiators on NBC, MGM announced that it is working on an animated series based on the prime-time hit. Developed with Johnny Ferraro, owner of Flor-Jon Films Inc., the cartoon will be part of a wide-reaching, multimedia promotional campaign that kicks off on Jan. 28 with the launch of a broadband website that will feature re-digitalized clips from the original series. MGM, Reveille and Flor-Jon Films are also planning a U.S. cross-city tour to support the show.
‘The new series and multimedia promotional campaign truly fulfills my dream and vision for American Gladiators,’ says Johnny Ferraro, exec producer and original series creator. ‘I look forward to the broadband site launch, cross-city tour, and new cartoon series. It’s truly exciting to see the Gladiators franchise grow and continue to succeed on all levels.’
MGM has not released further details concerning the animated series and whether it will air on television or be made available online. The live-action show has amateur athletes competing against a cast of muscle-bound characters in various tests of strength, agility and endurance. The series debuted with a two-hour special on Sunday, Jan. 6 and attracted 12 million viewers to become one of the highest-rated new programs of the new season with adults 18 to 49.
