Oscar-winning U.K. visual efects shop Framestore CFC is adding film producing to its resume, reports Daily Variety. The company behind the eye-popping visuals in New Line’s The Golden Compass and countless other films and television projects is lending production support to several conservatively budgeted films, including Richard Linklater’s period drama Me and Orson Welles, an Australian supernatural thriller titled Triangle and five genre pics from Ireland’s Generator Ent.
In additon to investing in the projects as an exec producer, Framestore is giving them the benefit of professional visual effects work normally reserved for films with bigger budgets. The studio’s managing director of film, Steve Norris, a former British Film commissioner says he hopes the initiative will encourage british filmmakers to make more ambitious, commercial movies. One of the films on Framestore’s production slate will involve creating a virtual world inside a video game.
Framestore will continue to produce effects for Hollywood blockbusters such as the upcoming The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and the Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight. Also on its plate is its first animated feature, Universal’s The Tale of Despereaux, based on Kate DiCamillo’s Newberry Medal-winning children’s book The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread. At last reporting, the film’s voice cast included Dustin Hoffman, Justin Long, William H. Macy, Robbie Coltrane, Kevin Kline, Christopher Lloyd, Stanley Tucci, Tracey Ullman, Sigourney Weaver and Ciaran Hinds.
