The 1981 cult-favorite animated feature Heavy Metal has been in the news quite a bit lately, from the recent announcement that director Gerald Potterton is receiving the Lifetime Achievement award at Cartoons on the Bay to word that filmmaker David Fincher (Se7en) is spearheading a new toon film based on the sci-fi and fantasy magazine. Now the producers of Comedy Central’s South Park are serving up their own tribute to the trippy flick in a new installment premiering on Wednesday, March 26 at 10 p.m. (ET/PT).
In the episode Major Boobage, the boys get concerned when Kenny starts skipping school and worry that he is experimenting with the newest way kids are getting high. Meanwhile, Kyle’s parents also become alarmed when they find contraband in his room. To illustrate how high one can get on this new drug, series creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker pay homage to Heavy Metal, a film that is perhaps best appreciated under the influence of psychotropic substances.
South Park has a history of lovingly spoofing other genres of animation. One of the most popular episodes has the boys purchasing ninja weapons and transforming in anime bad asses. The show has also taken not-so-flattering shots at FOX’s hit primetime cartoon series Family Guy in an episode that also includes a character that looks and sounds an awful lot like Bart Simpson.
