As DreamWorks Theatricals’ and Neal Street Prods.’ Shrek the Musical enjoys success on Broadway, an original cast recording is being prepped for release by Decca Broadway in March. The show stars Tony Award nominee Brian d’Arcy James as Shrek, Tony winner Sutton Foster as Princess Fiona, Tony nominee Christopher Sieber as Lord Farquaad, Tony nominee Daniel Breaker as Donkey and Tony nominee John Tartaglia as Pinocchio, among other cast members.
Directed by Tony nominee Jason Moore (Avenue Q), Shrek the Musical opened at the Broadway Theatre in New York City on Dec. 14. On Jan. 12, the entire cast congregated at Legacy Studios in New York City to record the cast album, which features music written by Olivier Award winner Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie and Caroline, or Change), and book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole). Tesori produced the cast album, and the show’s sound designer, Peter Hylenski, served as co-producer.
The musical is, of course, based on the blockbuster DreamWorks Animation film series, which is in turn based on William Steig’s classic children’s book, Shrek! For more information, go to www.shrekthemusical.com.
