Only a month after wowing the fanboy crowds at San Diego’s Comic-Con, Fox will preview selected scenes of James Cameron’s upcoming feature, Avatar at select cinemas and IMAX theaters. Massive interest from fans crashed the Avatar website earlier and many were unable to get tickets for this preview showing.

Fox is also debuting its 3-D/lenticular one-sheet posters for the film, and Ubisoft will unveil the trailer for its videogame James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game, while Mattel will introduce the action figures for the film’s Avatar and alien Na’vi characters. The extended look at Avatar is planned only for two showings on Friday night (Aug. 21). For more info, visit avatarmovie.com. The film opens everywhere December 18th.

The plot centers on an ex-Marine (Sam Worthington) who finds himself thrust into hostilities on an alien planet filled with exotic life forms. As an Avatar, a human mind in an alien body, he finds himself torn between two worlds, in a desperate fight for his own survival and that of the indigenous people. By the way, some bloggers have already pointed out some similarities between Cameron’s movie and last year’s indie CG-animated fantasy, Delgo!

The cast also includes Sigourney Weaver, Zoe Saldanha, Michelle Rodriguez and Giovanni Ribisi. Avatar has generated enormous interest thanks to its original sci-fi storyline and the state-of-the-art stereoscopic 3-D visual effects. Framestore CFC, Gentle Giant Studios, Hybride Technologies, Hydraulx, ILM, Pixel Liberation Front, Stan Winston Studio and Weta Digital are all working on the film’s elaborate effects.
