The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences turns its attention to the art of previs, using last year’s Oscar-nominated film Star Trek as a case study.
The academy will present Visualize This: Previs in the Making of Star Trek, featuring a panel of crew members from the film, on Nov. 18 at 8 p.m. at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood.
Writer-producer Damon Lindelof will lead the presentation, which includes demonstration of how previs was used in the making of the film. The panel also will include David Dozoretz, senior previsualization supervisor; Brian Pohl, previsualization supervisor; Roger Guyett, visual effects supervisor; Marc Evans, production executive; and film editors Maryann Brandon and Mary Jo Markey. Also on the panel will be production designer and Alex McDowell and previsualization supervisor Chris Edwards.
Star Trek, based on the classic television series created by Gene Roddenberry, received Oscar nominations for its visual effects, sound editing and sound mixing, and won an Oscar for makeup.
Tickets to the event cost $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID. Tickets are available for purchase by mail, at the Academy box office located at 8949 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, Calif., and open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets also are available online at www.oscars.org.
