The 2011 edition of Cartoon Movie, a European event focusing on the development and production of animated features, has reported a 20% increase in project submissions this year. Scheduled to take place March 2-4 in the French city of Lyon, the confab has received 90 feature applications and 500 participants in 2011.
The new edition of Cartoon Movie will showcase 54 European projects from 21 countries, 12 of which are in stereoscopic 3-D. According to Cartoon organizers, the trend this year is the rise in number of films targeting adult audiences—15 titles (almost 30%), compared to only 9 in 2008.
Among the finished films unspooling at the event this year are:
- Chico & Rita. Directed by Fernando Trueba, Javier Marsical and Tono Errando. (Co-produced by U.K.’s Magic Light Pictures and Spain’s Estudio Marsical)
- Holy Night! 3-D. Directed by Juan Galinanes. (Spain’s Dygra Films)
- Santa’s Apprentice. Directed by Luc Vincigerra. (France’s Alphanim, Ireland’s Cartoon Saloon, Australia’s Avrill Stark)
- The Great Bear. Directed by Esben Toft Jacobsen (Denmark’s Copenhagen Bombay)
- The Magic Crystal. Directed by Antti Haikala (Finland’s Epidem Zot, Belgium’s Skyline Entertainment and Araneo Belgium)
The event will also showcase Jung & Laurent Boileau’s Approved for Adoption, Raul Garcia’s Extraordinary Tales, Oskar Jonasson’s Legends of Valhalla: Thor, Thorbjorn’s Christoffersen’s Ronal the Barbarian, Jean-Francois Laguionie’s The Picture and Ignacio Ferreras’ Wrinkles under the “In-Production” banner.
