Go West, animation fans, and prepare for the arrival of Rango.
Directed by Gore Verbinski and starring the voice of his Pirates of the Caribbean collaborator Johnny Depp, Rango opens Friday at an estimated 3,700 cinemas. The film skews toward the adult end of the medium’s appeal, and is distributed by Paramount and features animation from ILM and has so far generated good reviews. Unlike most current CG-animated features, the film is not being released in a stereoscopic 3D edition.

The film opens opposite The Adjustment Bureau, which Universal is floating in about 2,800 theaters. The film is adapted from a story by science fiction icon Philip K. Dick and directed by George Nolfi and starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. The film features visual effects work from Rhino FX, Brainstorm Digital, Wildfire FX, Big Film Design, Proof and Phosphene.
Also opening this week is the CBS Films fantasy Beastly, at about 1,950 theaters; and the Relativity comedy Take Me Home Tonight at about 2,000 locations.
Still in release is the animated feature Gnomeo & Juliet, which was toppled from its throne when final numbers for last weekend’s box office came in and it was just behind the comedy Hall Pass.
Both films will face additional animated competition next week with the opening of Disney’s Mars Needs Moms, which will be in stereoscopic 3D.
