Women in Animation Gives Scholarship to CalArts’ Ivy Flores

The Phyllis Craig Scholarship Award Committee of Women in Animation International has announced its 2011 scholarship winner is Ivy Flores, a graduate student at the California Institute of the Arts.

Flores holds a degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, from their visual arts animation program. She is enrolled in CalArts’ Master of Fine Arts Film/Video Experimental Animation and Integrated Media program.

Flores and her work will receive her $1,000 scholarship at the June 16 combined meetings of the Women in Animation Los Angeles’ chapter general meeting and Women in Animation International’s annual meeting.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. with networking and refreshments followed by a very brief international business meeting and then a program focusing on “The Shorts Experience,” featuring the works of Sean Bishop, Dahveed, Ken Moro, Rick Soloman and Flores, who will also be presented with a student membership in Women in Animation.

Phyllis Craig, one of the founding members of Women in Animation, had a long career in animation and was know for mentoring young and aspiring men and women into animation careers over the years. After her death, WIA set up the scholarship fund in her memory. Donations to continue the scholarship fund are needed and may be made to the Phyllis Craig Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 17706, Encino, CA 92416.

Members and interested public should RSVP to lachapterrsvps@aol.com. The cut-off for reservations is June 14. Nonmembers will be asked for a donation of $10 and members are free. The meeting is being held at The Animation Guild, 1105 N. Hollywood Way, Burbank.
