BAFTA Toon Noms: ‘Tintin,’ ‘Arthur Christmas,’ ‘Rango’

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has nominated three features for its Best Animated Film Category.

Announced Tuesday by  actors Daniel Radcliffe and Holliday Grainger with BAFTA chairman Tim Corrie, the nominated films are:

  • The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, directed by Steven Spielberg
  • Arthur Christmas, directed by Sarah Smith
  • Rango, directed by Gore Verbinski

Additionally, the group nominated three films for best short animation:

  • Abuelas, by Afarin Eghbal, Kasia Malipan, Francesca Gardiner
  • Bobby Yeah, by Robert Morgan
  • A Morning Stroll, by Grant Orchard, Sue Goffe

Five films were nominated for best special visual effects:

  • The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, Joe Letteri
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2, Tim Burke, John Richardson, Greg Butler, David Vickery
  • Hugo, Rob Legato, Ben Grossman, Joss Williams
  • Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Joe Letteri, Dan Lemmon, R. Christopher White
  • War Horse, Ben Morris, Neil Corbould

The winners will be announced at a ceremony set for Feb. 12 at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London, with Stephen Fry as host.
