Gore Verbinski’s underdog hero Rango continued its winning streak last night at the 10th Annual VES Awards. Only a few nights after taking home four Annie Awards, the Paramount/ILM feature added four VES Awards to its list of wins, including the honors for Supporting VFX, Virtual Cinematography, Animated Character and Created Environment in an Animated Feature.
Hugo, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Transformers: Dark of the Moon all took home two awards in the Feature Motion Picture categories, while Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones each garnered a pair of awards in the Television categories.
Stan Lee received the Lifetime Achievement Award and visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull received the Georges Méliès Award at the show, which was hosted by Patton Oswalt. Antonio Banderas, Lou Ferrigno, directors Chris Miller, Marc Webb and Jennifer Yuh Nelson. Director Martin Scorsese also made a surprise appearance and paid homage to Georges Méliès, whose pioneering movies inspired Hugo. Both Stan Lee and Doug Trumbull paid heartfelt tributes to the men and women who create the visual effects for movies.
