By the power of Grayskull! Classic Mattel toy line Masters of the Universe is turning 30?! Yep, and Mattel and global media company Classic Media have announced a new host of consumer products cohorts to help kick off the celebrations. New partners include DC Entertainment, New Era Cap Co., Skinit, Funko, Icon Heroes, PopFun and Mixo. These companies join previously announced partners like Mill Creek (home ent.), Changes (apparel) and Disguise (costumes). The new Masters of the Universe lines will hit retail in line with the brand’s 30th anniversary this fall.
The party will kick off at the San Diego Comic-Con in July with annual subscriptions to the updated sculpts of the Mattel toys rolling out throughout the year going on sale; the toys will also be available on mattycollector.com. There will also be collector community-targeted “FAN-atic” events at San Diego and the New York Comic-Con.
DC Entertainment will be debuting an all-new comic-book series, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe time with Comic-Con. The six-issue limited edition series is written by James Robinson with pencils by Phillip Tan and inks by Ruy Jose and will reintroduce the story to readers with Skeletor having won a major victory and ruling from Castle Grayskull and Adam on a quest to regain his power.
Additionally, New Era Cap Co. will debut themed fitted, snapback and knit headwear this summer at New Era shops and specialty retailers. Skinit recently launched a line of Masters skins for devices including smartphones, tablets, laptops, MP3 players, game consoles, etc. Also look for novelty items to hit shelves around the anniversary, including Wacky Wobblers bobble-heads and Pop! vinyl figures from Funko; a Castle Grayskull mini-environment and desk accessories from Icon Heroes; Toon Tumblers glassware (pints, pitchers, mugs) and decorative refrigerator Mega-Mega Magnets from PopFun; and buildable paper figures called Kookykrafts from Mixo.
