‘Tram’ and ‘Crulic’ Win Annecy’s Top Prizes

The winners of the 36th edition of the Annecy International Animation Festival were announced this weekend (June 9). French short Tram by Michaela Pavlátová took home the Annecy Cristal for best short film, while the Romanian movie Crulic – The Path to Beyond, by Anca Damian, was the winner in the best feature category. Both projects were 2D animated.

In the TV category, Peter Browngardt’s Secret Mountain Fort Awesome (“Nightmare Sauce”) from Cartoon Network was the winner in the best series race, while Radical Sheep’s Stella and Sam was given a Special Award for a TV series. Johannes Weiland and Uwi Heidschotter’s acclaimed The Gruffalo’s Child (Magic Light, Studio Soi GmbH KF Film produktion) won the award for Best TV Special.

According to the Annecy market organizers, this year saw an increase in attendance of 4% compared to 2011: 470 exhibiting companies (450 in 2011), 287 buyers, distributors, and investors (238 in 2011) and nearly 2,500 accreditation badge holders in total. More than 1000 companies from 63 countries attended this year’s edition, which also reported an 18% increase in exhibition space.

The 2013 edition of the festival will take place June 10-15. NFB’s Marcel Jean will be the new artistic director of the next festival, taking over the job from fest veteran Serge Bromberg. For more info, visit www.annecy.org.
