Channel 4 Offers More Info on ‘Snowman’ Sequel

Channel 4 in the U.K. has revealed a few more details on the upcoming sequel to its classic animated special The Snowman, which is co-produced by Lupus Films. Based on the popular children’s book by Raymond Briggs, the new show finds the Snowman introducing a new best friend The Snowdog and sharing the magic of the winter wonderland with a new young boy.

“The sequel promises to reunite viewers with Snowman and introduce a new best friend, The Snowdog – complete with odd socks for ears and a satsuma for a nose,” a Channel 4 spokesperson told The Daily Mail.

Viewers will also get to see new landmarks such as the London Eye this time when the capital is depicted on screen.

The special’s storyline hasn’t been revealed, but the good news is that Briggs is involved as a script consultant. Hilary Audus and Joanna Harrison, who worked on the original special, are also billed as writers and co-directors. While the memorable soundtrack by Howard Blake (which included the “Walking in the Air theme) was one of the key ingredients of the 1982 special, new music has been commissioned for the second outing.

Puffin is also publishing an e-book to mark the special. Penguin’s managing director Francesca Dow said, “The sequel heralds an exciting time for The Snowman which perfectly captures the magic of childhood and wintery wonder and remains as relevant today as it was 30 years ago. The Snowman and The Snowdog will be as enchanting and memorable as the original and delight fans the world over.”

Nominated for an Academy Award, the original Snowman depicts the friendship between a schoolboy and a snowman that comes to life at the stroke of midnight on winter and the pair’s adventures at home and across the earth.
