The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences will host a special 3-D screening of the classic Chinese animated feature The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven as part of its China Onscreen Biennial, presented with the UCLA Confucius Institute. The film will play Wednesday, October 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood.
Making its West Coast premiere, The Monkey King has long been regarded as a classic of Chinese animation. The film was directed by Wan Laiming and Tang Cheng in the 1960s and is based on traditional folk lore of the country. The colorful, ornate animation has been giving a dazzling 3-D upgrade by the dedicated artists at L.A.’s Technicolor studio.
The China Onscreen Biennial (COB) is a four-week, bicoastal collaboration among American cultural organizations to promote U.S.-China dialogue through the art of film. The COB will explore both the past and present of Mainland Chinese cinema by bringing some of the best examples of contemporary Chinese film as well as archival rarities and restorations to American Audiences.
