Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie added two more honors to its fast-growing arsenal of critics awards this past weekend. The acclaimed Disney release is slowly but surely emerging as one of the top contenders of the award season as it picked up the Best Animated Award from both the L.A. Film Critics and Boston Critics over the weekend. The pic was also selected as the Best Animated Film of the year by the New York Film Critics.
However, other animated features have also been receiving accolades in the past few weeks. Just today (Monday, Dec. 10) the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Assoc. picked LAIKA’s ParaNorman as the Best Animated Feature of the year. A few weeks ago, the National Board of Review hailed Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph as the Best Animated feature of the year and the New York Film Critics Online selected Chico & Rita as the best of 2012 (the Spanish film that was eligible for an Osar last year!). Let’s not forget that the first animation award of the season, the Hollywood Film Award went to DreamWorks Rise of the Guardians. This means that at this point, it’s anyone’s guess who will be taking the Oscar home in February!
The L.A. Critics also selected Don Hertzfeldt’s acclaimed short It’s Such a Beautiful Day as the runner-up in the animation category. This 23-minute effort is the third and final chapter in the life chronicles of a mysterious man named Bill—the trilogy that includes Everything Will Be OK and I Am So Proud of You.
Next stop on this crazy award season rollercoaster is Thursday morning at 5 a.m. (PT) and 8 a.m. (ET), when the nominations for Hollywood Foreign Press Assoc.’s Golden Globes are announced. By the way, not even one animated movie or TV series made today’s list of the Top 10 Best Movies and TV series of 2012. Now that’s cold!
