Authorities Pull ‘The Croods’ Out of Chinese Theaters

A Guangzhou-based cinema chain manager told The Hollywood Reporter that Chinese authorities are forcing theater owns to end the run of DreamWorks’ The Croods two weeks earlier than planned. The film was originally scheduled to run through June 24. Film regulators had previously cancelled screenings of Django Unchained in April.

The Croods has been a huge success in China, generating more than $63.7 million in the country as of Thursday. But the government is trying to boost numbers for locally produced animated features, which haven’t been performing well in China.

Paramount’s Star Trek Into Darkness was released in China on May 28, and Warner Bros.’ Man of Steel is slated for a June 20 opening.
