‘Despicable Me 2' Breaks B.O. Records Overseas

Although the Universal/Illumination animated feature hasn’t opened in the U.S. yet, the film has already made over $41.5 million from only seven international territories. The pic, which will open on Tuesday (July 2nd) in the U.S. came in at No. 4 internationally. Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University is currently playing in 37 territories and brought in $44.2 million overseas.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Despicable 2 is performing better than Despicable Me, Kung Fu Panda 2, The Croods, Shrek Forever After and the last two Madagascar pics in the same seven territories. In Australia, Despicable 2 is even ahead of Monsters University.

Despicable 2 went straight up to No. 1 in the U.K., France, French Switzerland, Netherlands and Belgium and was beaten only by Man of Steel in Sweden and Australia.In the U.K., it debuted to $15.2 million, Universal’s top opening of all time and the No. 1 opening of 2013 so far. Including previews, Despicable has earned a total of $23.3 million in the U.K. and Ireland. In France, the movie has already made $8 million.
