An all-new animated mini-movie featuring Peyo’s beloved little blue crew will hit shelves this fall as Sony Pictures Home Entertainment releases The Smurfs: The Legend of Smurfy Hollow on September 10. The Halloween themed adventure will blend traditional hand drawn techniques as well as the latest in CG animation and reunites the talented stars of the studio’s blockbuster The Smurfs 2, including Alan Cumming, Fred Armisen, Anton Yelchin and Hank Azaria. The special was also selected for the official competition at Annecy this year.
Directed by animation vet Stephan Franck (whose credits include The Iron Giant and Despicable Me) and produced by Mary Ellen Bauder, the 22-minute Smurfy Hollow is an autumnal romp teaching the value of friendship. When Brainy Smurf is favored to win the annual Smurfberry Hunt for the ninth year in a row, Gutsy Smurf sets out to find out how he keeps winning. The investigation leads Gutsy to spooky Smurfy Hollow–and right into Gargamel’s trap. Brainy and Gutsy, with the help of Smurfette, must put aside their rivalry to outwit Gargamel and evade the legendary ghost of the Headless Horseman.
The studio will also be releasing The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol on September 10. The 22-minute holiday special will also feature voice talent from the Smurfs films and retools the Dickensian classic in a heartwarming family adventure that finds Papa Smurf using his magic potion and there enchanted Smurfs to teach Grouchy Smurf the true meaning of Christmas.
