Evalds Lacis’ animated short Hedgehogs and the City won the Best European Animated Short prize at the 27th edition of the Cinekid Festival in Amsterdam on Tuesday. Twenty animated European projects were competing for the price.
Evalds Lacis is born in Riga, Latvia. He graduated from the Latvian Academy of Culture as cameraman. He made his debut as director with The New Species (2008), which premiered at Berlin and was a runner-up at the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival. His other short films are Ice Master (2009) Lacis is currently director at the film studio Animacijas Brigade. In the short, Hedgehog leads the other animals in a plan to regain their homes after waking to find the forest overrun by the city. The Cinekid festival is held October 16-25 in Amsterdam.
