The hotly anticipated new toon Space Dandy, from the creative team behind Cowboy Bebop, will be the first ever anime series on Adult Swim to have a simultaneous TV broadcast with Japan. The English dub version, prepared by FUNimation Entertainment, will launch on the channel in January. The show will also have a simultaneous broadcast in 41 countries throughout Asia. FUNimation has also acquired home entertainment, digital, theatrical and merchandise rights for the sci-fi action series, and is producing the English version in association with the Dandy Production Committee in Japan.
Space Dandy follows the adventures of its titular hero, a dreamy adventurer with a to-die-for pompadour who travels across the galaxy in search of aliens no one has ever laid eyes on. Each new species discovered earns him a hefty reward, but he has to race against other alien hunters to get to the specimens first. He is joined in his enterprise by his sidekicks: a rundown robot named QT and Meow, the cat-like space alien.
The show is produced by Bones Inc. in Japan, with Shinichiro Watanabe (Samurai Champloo) as general director and Shingo Natsume (Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos) directing. The Bebop veteran team also includes writers Dai Sato, Kimiko Ueno and Keiko Nobumoto, character designer Yoshiyuki Ito and spaceship designer Thomas Romain.
