The Italian digital media conference VIEW, happening Oct 15-18 in Torino (immediately following VIEWFest) will be chock full of activity, information and special events this year. Highlights include a presentation about Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 with directors Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn, a screening of Monsters University presented by director Dan Scanlon and a presentation by award-winning indie filmmaker Peter Chanthanakone of three of his animated shorts. The digital film festival will also screen The Smurfs: The Legend of Smurfy Hollow, Blue Umbrella, Gravity, the best of SIGGRAPH ’13 and Italian Mix 2013.
Many screenings will be complimented by workshops and presentations. Cameron and Pearn will give the event’s closing keynote, and show how to create the wacky Foodimals from Cloudy 2. Pixar’s Supervising TD Christopher Burrows will discuss the stunning backgrounds from Blue Umbrella, and Sandra Karpman will unveil “The Secret Camera Rules of Pixar.” Bruno Chauffard will present the making of Despicable Me, writer/director Stephan Franck will present The Legend of Smurfy Hollow, Chanthanakone will tell attendees how to accelerate the 3D animation pipeline for independent short films, and Massimo Carrier and a crew from Maga Animation Studios offer a layout workflow for CGI action TV series.
On the VFX side, Industrial Light & Magic’s CCO and senior vfx supe John Knoll will give the keynote address, demonstrating the effects of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim. Additional sessions will cover Star Trek into Darkness (Roger Guyett, ILM), Iron Man 3 (Christopher Townsend), Elysium (Peter Muyzers, Image Engine), Gravity (Max Solomon, Framestore), The Making of Warm Bodies (Henrik Fett, Look! Effects), Oz the Great and Powerful (Troy Saliba, Imageworks) and World War Z (Marco Carboni, MPC).
