Disney has announced that for one week only it will be presenting a special limited engagement of its upcoming live-action flick Saving Mr. Banks in a state-of-the-art theater on the Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank, California. Guests will then get the chance to walk in Uncle Walt’s footsteps on a special tour of the famous studio. The limited engagement features one show daily at 7 p.m. from December 13-19. The film will open wide in the U.S. December 20.
The $50 ticket price (you can purchase them online) includes a reserved theater seat for the screening as well as the “Walk in Walt’s Footsteps” tour immediately following. On the tour, guests will have photo ops with Micky Mouse as well as Mary Poppins and Bert the Chimney Sweep, and get a chance to see sets from Mr. Banks. The tour also includes a jaunt to the animation building and a visit to the Legends Plaza. Guests will also receive a free copy of the Mary Poppins 50th Anniversary DVD (SRP $17.95).
Directed by John Lee Hancock, Saving Mr. Banks is inspired by the untold backstory of how Disney’s Mary Poppins made it to the big screen despite the odds. Starring Tom Hanks as Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers, the film tells how Walt’s promise to his daughters to make a film of their favorite book took 20 years to reach completion, hinging on two crucial weeks in 1961 when Travers reluctantly travels to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s plans. Despite the razzle-dazzle of Hollywood, it is only when Disney taps into his own childhood that he finds a way to break Travers’ icy facade and win her approval.
