LGBT Characters Likely in ‘Sailor Moon’ Reboot

Sailor Moon is coming back to anime in a reboot said to be a more faithful adaptation of Naoko Takeuchi’s original manga that likely will retain several LGBT characters.

Producer Atsutoshi Umezawa explained in a press release that the new show will be quite different from the original anime.

“This second anime adaptation of Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon is not remaking the previous anime, but adapting the original manga and starting from scratch again.”

Directing the new Sailor Moon series is Munehisa Sakai (One Piece, One Piece: Strong World, Suite Precure!), with Yūji Kobayashi (Saint Seiya Omega, Smile Precure!) as series script supervisor.

According to a report on the official website for the Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary Project, the new anime will premiere this July in Japan and will stream worldwide via the Niconico service.

The series was first announced in 2012 with a summer 2013 premiere date, but was delayed.

Sailor Moon began as a manga by Takeuchi in 1992 and rapidly spread into anime, live-action TV and other projects worldwide. The original anime, which Toei produced from 1992-1997, first aired in North American via syndication in the mid-1990s.
