Everything was awesome once again for The LEGO Movie, which was the nation’s top-grossing film for a third weekend in a row with an estimated $31.5 million in ticket sales.
The Warner Bros. Animation Group feature has grossed a whopping $183 million in domestic ticket sales with a worldwide tally of more than $275 million in just three weekends in release. Written and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the movie has been demolishing the competition and helping improve box office business by roughly 6 percent over last year.
The thriller 3 Days to Kill came in second with a $12.3 million debut followed by Pompeii, making $10 million domestic and $22 million foreign, also in its debut weekend. Sony’s RoboCop remake was No. 4 with $9.4 million, bringing its domestic total to $43 million and its foreign total to $100 million.
Disney’s animated hit Frozen continued to hone in on the billion-dollar mark, earning $4.4 million this weekend to push its domestic total to $384 million while its foreign take now stands at $596 million. Its $980 million global total makes it the second-highest grossing animated film of all time, moving past this past summer’s hit Despicable Me 2.
Meanwhile, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug had a huge $32.7 million opening in China, making it the biggest debut in that nation for Warner Bros. The film now has an estimated $894 million worldwide total.
