Sega Revitalizes Game Franchise with ‘Sonic Boom’

Sonic Boom, a new CG-animated series starring video-game icon Sonic the Hedgehog, is being coproduced by Sega of America and OuiDO! Productions as part of broad initiative to revitalize the character that also will include new video games and a toy line.

The TV series — the franchise’s fifth but its first CG entry — will take an ensemble comedy approach and is set to premiere on Cartoon Network in the United States and Canal J and Gulli in France during during the 2014-15 season. It will consist of 52 11-minute episodes.

Executive producers on the show are Evan Baily, Donna Friedman Meir and Jane McGregor on behalf of Sega; and Sandrine Nguyen and Boris Hertzog from OuiDO!. Other partners involved in the TV series include Lagardère Entertainment Rights for distribution and Lagardère Active TV Licensing & New Business for licensing and merchandise in France.

An icon in the gaming world for more than 20 years, Sonic Boom will debut a new look for the characters and a multimedia approach in which the worlds of the TV series and the game will cross over and share a common narrative.

The game will be a prequel to the series and is being developed in the United States by California based Big Red Button Entertainment (Wii U) and Sanzaru Games (Nintendo 3DS) in collaboration with Sonic Team, this is the third title to be released as part of an exclusive deal with Nintendo.

Sonic Boom will be supported by a robust global licensing and merchandising program, anchored by new master toy partner Tomy. Tomy’s line will showcase the new character looks, stressing interaction between core characters, and will feature new play patterns based on both the new game and TV series.
