The winners of the 2014 Writers Guild of America Awards have finally been unveiled, and The Simpsons has snapped the top Animation prize in an all Matt Groening competition which pitted the Fox show against Comedy Central’s Futurama. The winning episode was “A Test Before Trying,” written by Joel H. Cohen for season 24 of the long-running animated sitcom. The episode finds Bart charged with passing a proctored test that will determine the fate of Springfield Elementary, while Homer embarks on a money-making parking meter scheme after Mr. Burns raises the cost of electricity–only find Chief Wiggum is onto him.
Other nominees in the Animation category were “Game of Tones” (Futurama, written by Michael Rowe), “Hardly Kirk-ing” (Simpsons, Tom Gammill & Max Pross), “Murder on the Planet Express” (Futurama, Lew Morton), “Saturday Morning Fun Pit” (Futurama, Patric M. Verrone) and “Yolo” (Simpsons, Michael Nobori).
Disney Channel’s live-action A.N.T. Farm – “influANTces” (Vincent Brown) carried the Children’s Episodic & Specials category, beating out The Hub’s Spooksville (“The Haunted Cave,” Jim Krieg) and PBS’s Sesame Street (“Simon Says,” Christine Ferraro). And David Rosen took home the prize for Television Graphic Art & Animation for his work on CBS News Animations. You can see the full list of nominees and winners at www.wga.org.
