Brazillian director Ale Abreu’s dialog-free, richly artistic film Boy and the World took home the top Cristal prize at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival at the awards ceremony Saturday. Recently acquired by GKIDS for North American distribution, the film centers on a little boy who leaves his idyllic village in search of his father and discovers a fantastic world dominated by animal-machines and strange beings.
Boy and the World also earned the Audience Award. Bill Plympton’s Cheatin’ received the Jury Award, and Mizuho Nishikubo’s Giovanni’s Island, produced by Production I.G, was awarded a Jury Distinction. See annecy.org for a complete list of prize winners and nominees.
