‘Apes’ Still Rules; ‘Planes’ Finishes Third

Apes continued to rule at the box office, while DisneyToon Studios’ animated sequel Planes: Fire & Rescue opened in third place.

Fox’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes sold an estimated $36 million in tickets in the domestic market, bringing its total to $138 million. The movie has earned $101 million overseas for a total of $240 million worldwide in two weekends of release.

Planes: Fire & Rescue’s $18 million opening was down slightly from last year’s $22 million opening last year on Aug. 9 for the first Planes feature. The sequel also earned $9 million abroad for a $27 million worldwide total. The original Planes went on to earn $90 million domestic and $129 million foreign.

Transformers: Age of Extinction slipped to fifth place for the weekend, with its $10 million take bringing its domestic total to $227 million. The fourth movie in the toy-based franchise has earned $659 million overseas for an $886 million worldwide total.

In eighth place is DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon 2, with $3.8 million in ticket sales for the weekend. The movie’s domestic total stands at $160 million and its foreign take is more than $223 million for a $384 million global total.

Disney’s Maleficent landed in ninth place for the weekend with $3.3 million. The live-action take on the Sleeping Beauty tale has earned $228 million domestic and $468 million abroad for a $697 million total.

And down in 17th place is the sci-fi actioner Edge of Tomorrow, which took in $1.1 million for the weekend. The Doug Liman-directed movie has earned $96 million domestic and $261 million abroad for a $357 million total.
