Liz Holzman, an Emmy-winning veteran of television animation for more than two decades, died Aug. 11 at the age of 61 following a lengthy battle with cancer.
Holzman began working in animation after earning in 1979 a master’s degree in film graphics from Cal Arts. She worked as an animator, character designer, storyboard artist, writer, director and producer for such studios as Richard Williams Animation, Disney, Warner Brothers, Marvel Productions and Universal Studios.
Holzman won three Daytime Emmys for her work as director and producer on the hit 1990s animated series Pinky and the Brain and Animaniacs, and was nominated for six more.
In 2003, Holzman moved to Portland, Ore., where she painted, worked as a teacher and did freelance film and design work.
She is survived by her son, Nathaniel, and her brother, Thomas. In lieu of flowers, Holzman’s family and friends request donations be made in her name to Doctors Without Borders.
