‘Book of Life’ Opens with $17M Weekend

The Book of Life opened wide to solid results, selling an estimated $17 million in tickets this weekend.

That’s good enough for third place at the box office, behind the opening weekend of the Brad Pitt World War II feature Fury, with $23 million, and the strong legs of David Fincher’s Gone Girl, at $17.8 million.

That’s a solid opening for the Reel FX-produced, Fox-distributed animated feature. The Book of Life has an estimated budget of $50 million and, according to Variety, attracted an audience that was 57 percent female, 54 percent under the age of 25 and 30 percent Latino.

The Book of Life had limited openings abroad, where it earned $8.4 million in ticket sales. The film will roll out in markets where it should do well, including Mexico, in coming weeks.

The sci-fi, visual-effects thriller The Maze Runner sold $4.5 million in tickets this weekend — good enough for 10th place. It’s earned $91 million domestic and $160 million abroad for a $251 million total.

LAIKA’s The Boxtrolls was 12th at the box office this weekend, with $2.7 million in ticket sales. It’s earned a gross of $46 million domestic and $36 million abroad for an $82 million total.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy was just behind The Boxtrolls with a $1 million weekend. The movie’s grossed $327 million domestic and $404 million abroad for a strong $732 million total.
