The Toronto International Film Festival (www.tiff.net) will be presenting a pan-genre retrospective on the art of stop-motion animation at the TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto, running November 27, 2015, through January 3, 2016.
As part of the festivities, LAIKA Entertainment’s marketing and brand manager Mark Shapiro will be on hand to introduce screenings of the studio’s acclaimed films Coraline (2009) and The Boxtrolls (2014); additional introductions by director, screenwriter and producer John Landis are also part of the series, and Landis will present a “Harryhausen Master Class” on Jason and the Argonauts on December 2.
Magic Motion: The Art of Stop-Motion Animation will explore the evolution of the technique, from the landmark creature work in King Kong (1933) to the thrilling epic Jason and the Argonauts (1963) to James Cameron’s sci-fi flashpoint The Terminator (1984), and from the family-friendly adventures of Aardman’s Wallace & Gromit to the bizarre worlds of Jan Svankmajer and the Brothers Quay.
Other highlights run the gamut. Visitors can check out Evil Dead II (1987), featuring the work of special effects artist Tom Sullivan; Wes Anderson’s The Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009); Svankmajer’s astonishing Lewis Carroll adaptation Alice (1988) and the Czech filmmaker’s Kafkaesque Faust (1994).
