The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has extended membership invitations to 683 distinguished filmmakers, artists and executives “who represent the best in our global film community, and who have made a lasting impact on movie fans everywhere,” according to president Cheryl Boone Isaacs.
Spurred by calls for greater diversity, AMPAS’ Class of 2016 is 46% female (bringing the overall total to 27% of members, a 2% increase) and 41% people of color (for 11% overall, up 3%). New international members total 283, representing 59 different countries.
Representing the animation and VFX communities in the Directors and Producers branches are Ari Folman (The Congress, Waltz with Bashir), Marjane Satrapi (The Voices, Persepolis) and masters of sci-fi spectacle Lana & Lilly Wachowski; and Roy Lee (The LEGO Movie).
