Netflix and CBS Studios International have inked a landmark global licensing agreement for the upcoming, all-new Star Trek series. Netflix will be the exclusive premiere home of the sci-fi adventure in 188 countries (excluding U.S. and Canada), with each episode available globally for streaming within 24 hours of its U.S. premiere.
On top of the forthcoming series, all 727 existing episodes of the Star Trek TV library — including Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise — will be available around the world by the end of 2016.
The all-new Star Trek begins production in Toronto in September, with a TV premiere set for January 2017, marking the franchise’s first return to the small screen since 2005. Star Trek will introduce fans to a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology of the beloved universe. The show will launch in the U.S. with a special premiere episode on CBS, which, along with all subsequent episodes, will then be available in the U.S. exclusively on the CBS All Access SVOD service.
Star Trek is co-created and executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller, based on Gene Roddenberry’s original series. Fuller launched his career writing for Deep Space Nine and Voyager; Kurzman is co-writer and producer on the films Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness. The series is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout, Fuller’s Living Dead Guy Prod., and Roddenberry Entertainment. Also exec producing are Heather Kadin, Gretchen Berg & Aaron Herbert, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth.
