Things continue to heat up in the races for our favorite Academy Award categories. Having announced a record-setting number of qualifying animated features and announced the 10 short-listed animated short films, AMPAS has announced that 20 films are in the running for the Best Visual Effects prize at the 89th Oscars.

The Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee determined the preliminary shortlist. Later this month, the committee will select the 10 films that will advance to nominations voting. Nominations for the 89th Oscars will be announced on January 24, 2017. The 89th Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2017.
